Peak run came at 27 with a final in Australia

Walsh’s best Grand Slam result was the 1979 Australian Open final at age 27. That stands out as her only final, and it came during a stretch when she was regularly reaching the later rounds.

Her strongest two-year stretch was 1981-1983

From 1981 through 1983, she reached at least the round of 32 in multiple majors, including the 1981 US Open round of 16, 1982 Australian Open round of 16, and 1983 Australian Open and Wimbledon round of 16. This was her clearest sustained period of deep runs.

Australian Open was her most productive major

Across the data, her Australian Open results include the final in 1979, a quarterfinal in 1984, round of 16 finishes in 1982 and 1983, and a round of 32 in 1981. No other Slam shows that many high-end results.

Late-career decline was steep after age 32

After the 1984 Australian Open quarterfinal at age 32, her results dropped to round-of-128 exits in 1984 US Open, 1985 US Open and Wimbledon, 1986 US Open, and all four of her 1987-1988 appearances. The only exception was a 1985 Australian Open round of 64.

She was a durable Slam presence over two decades

Walsh’s Grand Slam career spans 1969-1988, with 53 tournaments and 117 matches. She finished with a 64-53 record, meaning she won more than half of her matches while competing across a long Open Era career.
