Two amateur-era titles, then a 19-year Grand Slam gap

Gonzales won the US Open in 1948 and 1949, both in the Amateur Era, then did not appear again in the Grand Slam results until 1968. That creates a 19-year gap between his last amateur result and his first Open Era result.

Open Era comeback peaked immediately at 40

His first Open Era Grand Slam appearance came in 1968 at age 40, and it was his best Open Era result: a French Open semifinal. In the same year he also reached the US Open quarterfinals and Wimbledon round of 32.

From 1968 through 1970, Gonzales produced his strongest Open Era run: semifinal, quarterfinal, then round of 16 and round of 32 results. The sequence shows a sharp decline after the 1968 peak, but still sustained deep runs through age 42.

Late-career results fell quickly after age 41

At age 41 in 1969, he reached the round of 16 at all three Open Era events listed that year. By age 42 in 1970 he was out in the US Open round of 32, and by ages 44-45 he was losing in the first round at the US Open.

Overall record was built on a high win rate across 58 matches

Across 15 Grand Slam tournaments and 58 matches, Gonzales compiled a 45-13 record, a 78% win rate. That total includes both eras, but the data show his deepest results were concentrated in the Amateur Era titles and the 1968 Open Era semifinal.
