Only one second-week run in 21 Slam appearances

McManus’s best Grand Slam result was a single R16 showing, and it came at Wimbledon in 1972 at age 31. Across 21 tournaments and 33 matches, that was his lone appearance beyond the opening week.

His peak came in a narrow 1970-1973 window

All of his best results cluster between 1970 and 1973: R32 at the 1970 US Open, R16 at Wimbledon in 1972, and R64 finishes in 1970, 1972, and 1973. Before 1970 and after 1973, he never advanced past R64.

Wimbledon produced both his best and one of his longest droughts

Wimbledon was the site of his top result in 1972, but it also includes four R128 exits in 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1971, plus another in 1976 and 1977. That makes the event a clear mix of his highest ceiling and frequent early losses.

His late-career return was entirely first-round exits

After a two-year gap in Grand Slam results, McManus returned in 1976 and 1977 and lost in R128 in all four appearances. Those final four matches came at ages 35 and 36, with no improvement on his earlier results.

He was more effective at the US Open than at the other majors

His US Open record includes the only R32 result, two R64 finishes, and three R128 losses, while Wimbledon and the French Open each feature multiple R128 exits. The Australian Open appears only once, with an R64 in 1970.
