Wimbledon was the center of his Grand Slam career

He played Wimbledon 15 times, far more than any other major listed. His two best Grand Slam results both came there, reaching the round of 16 in 1992 and 1994.

His peak came in his early 30s, not his early 20s

Bates’ two round-of-16 runs arrived at ages 30 and 32, while his first Grand Slam appearance at age 20 ended in the first round. His best results therefore came well into the later phase of his career.

1994 was his strongest single season

In 1994 he produced his best Wimbledon result, the round of 16 at age 32, and also reached the US Open round of 128. That was his only season with a Grand Slam result better than round of 32.

Australian Open and French Open were mostly early exits

Across the Australian Open and French Open, his results were heavily concentrated in the first two rounds: eight round-of-128 finishes and only three round-of-64-or-better showings combined. His best at either event was round of 32, reached twice at each tournament.

His Grand Slam output was spread across a long span but ended quietly

His Grand Slam career ran from 1982 to 1996, covering 36 tournaments and 58 matches with a 22-36 record. The final two entries were first-round exits at Wimbledon in 1996 and the US Open, Wimbledon, and French Open in 1995.
