French Open was his clear best Slam

His top result was a round-of-16 run at the French Open in 1986, and he also reached the French Open round of 32 in 1987 and 1988. Across his 21 Slam tournaments, five of his best-sixteen-or-better results came at Roland Garros.

He was far more productive on clay-season majors than elsewhere

All of his deepest runs came at the French Open or, once, the Australian Open: R16, three R32s, and five R64s. By contrast, his Wimbledon and US Open results never went beyond the round of 32, and most ended in the round of 128.

His peak came early, before age 21

De la Peña’s best Slam result arrived at age 19 in 1986, and he reached another strong French Open showing at age 20 in 1987. After age 22, he never advanced beyond the round of 64 again.

1989 was his busiest and most varied Slam season

He played all four majors in 1989, the only year in the data with four Slam appearances. That season produced his only Australian Open round of 64 and his only US Open round of 128, alongside a French Open round of 64 and Wimbledon round of 128.

His Slam career ended with a long slide

After reaching the French Open round of 64 in 1993 at age 26, he fell to round-of-128 exits in all three of his final Slam appearances: Wimbledon 1993, French Open 1994, and Wimbledon 1992 already showed the pattern of repeated early losses.
