Best Grand Slam run came in 1985–1990, but only to the round of 32

Pate’s peak result was R32, reached five times: Wimbledon and US Open in 1985, Wimbledon in 1986, Wimbledon in 1989, and Wimbledon in 1990. He never advanced beyond that stage in any of his 26 Grand Slam tournaments.

Wimbledon was his strongest major by far

His best Wimbledon result was better than at the other Slams: he reached R32 three times and R64 twice, with only two R128 exits. By contrast, his Australian Open and French Open appearances never got past R64.

His most productive stretch was 1985-1991

From 1985 through 1991, he produced all five of his R32 results and most of his R64 finishes, including back-to-back R64s at the US Open and Wimbledon in 1988. That seven-year span contains his entire top-end Grand Slam output.

He was most competitive in his mid-20s

Pate’s best results clustered at ages 23 to 28, with his only R32 finishes coming at 23, 24, 27, and 28. At age 29 in 1991-1992, he went 0-4 and did not get past R64.

His Grand Slam record was modest but consistent across 44 matches

Across 26 tournaments and 44 matches, he finished 18-26, a 41% win rate. The data show repeated early exits, but also enough wins to reach at least the third round in five events.
