Two quarterfinal runs define his peak

Gilbert’s best Grand Slam results were two quarterfinals, at Wimbledon in 1990 and the US Open in 1987. No deeper run appears in the 38-tournament record, making those his clear ceiling.

His strongest stretch came from 1984 to 1987

Across those four seasons, he reached at least the round of 32 in every Slam he entered and twice reached the round of 16 in 1986. That run also includes both of his quarterfinals, showing his most consistent high-level period.

US Open was his most productive major

He reached the round of 16 or better at the US Open four times: 1986, 1987, 1990, and 1992. By contrast, his Australian Open and French Open records never went beyond the round of 16.

Late-career results trended downward after age 30

From age 30 onward, his best results were two round-of-16 finishes at the 1992 and 1993 US Opens. The rest of that span was mostly early exits, including a first-round loss at the 1995 Australian Open at age 33.

He was a durable Slam competitor, but not a deep-run specialist

Gilbert played 38 Grand Slam tournaments and won 53 of 91 matches, a 58% record. His results cluster heavily around the round of 32 and round of 64, with 11 round-of-32 finishes and 5 round-of-16 finishes.
