Two quarterfinals, both in the early Open Era

Carmichael’s best Grand Slam results were two quarterfinals, and both came in the same stretch: Wimbledon in 1970 and the Australian Open in 1973. Across 36 tournaments and 79 matches, those were his deepest runs.

His strongest season was 1971 by match depth

In 1971 he reached the round of 16 at the US Open, the round of 32 at both the French Open and Australian Open, and the round of 64 at Wimbledon. That is his only season in the data with four Slam appearances and no result worse than R64.

Late-career volume stayed high, but results flattened

From 1975 through 1979 he played 18 Grand Slam events, yet only once did he get beyond the round of 64: the 1978 Australian Open, where he reached the round of 16 at age 38. Most of the remaining results in that span were R64 or R128.

Australian Open was his most productive major

His Australian Open results include his two quarterfinals, one round of 16, two round-of-32 finishes, and several R64s. By contrast, his Wimbledon and US Open records top out at a quarterfinal and a round of 16 respectively, with many early exits.

He was still competing at 39

Carmichael’s final recorded Grand Slam matches came in 1979 at age 39, with results of R64 at the Australian Open and R128 at both Wimbledon and the US Open. That closes a Slam career spanning 1968 to 1979.
