Four Amateur-era titles came in a five-year span

Ashley Cooper’s Grand Slam record shows four Amateur-era championships: the Australian Open in 1957 and 1958, plus Wimbledon and the US Open in 1958. Those titles were all earned between ages 20 and 21.

1958 was his peak season by far

In 1958 he reached the title in three of four Slam appearances, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, while also making the French Open semifinal. That single year accounts for three of his four career Slam titles.

He was a finalist twice before completing the sweep

In 1957, Cooper reached both the US Open and Wimbledon finals at age 20, after already winning the Australian Open that year. The following season he converted those near-misses into titles at both events.

His only Open Era result was a first-round exit

Cooper’s Grand Slam career extended into the Open Era only once, at the 1968 French Open, where he lost in the round of 64 at age 31. That stands in sharp contrast to his Amateur-era record of 72 wins in 82 matches.

He was already competitive as a teenager

Before his first title, Cooper reached the Australian Open quarterfinals at age 17 in 1954, then repeated that result at age 18 in 1955 and twice reached the quarterfinals again at age 19 in 1956. His rise was gradual before the breakthrough years of 1957-58.
