Peak came at Roland Garros in 1989

Late-career decline was abrupt after 1995

In 1995 he reached the French Open round of 16 and the US Open round of 64, but every Slam result from 1996 through 1998 was a first-round exit. That final phase includes five straight R128 finishes across 1996-1998.

He was most productive in the Soviet Union era

His best results all came while representing the Soviet Union: the 1989 semifinal, the 1988 and 1990 French Open quarterfinals, and the 1986 and 1987 US Open round-of-16 runs. The later Unified Team and Russia periods contain no result better than the 1995 French Open round of 16.
