Two semifinal runs bookend his peak Grand Slam level

Ruffels reached the semifinals twice in the Open Era, in 1969 Australian Open and 1976 Australian Open. His only other semifinal came in the Amateur Era at the 1968 Australian Open, showing three total major semifinal appearances across two eras.

Australian Open was clearly his strongest major

Across his 30 Grand Slam tournaments, his best Open Era results included two semifinals and two quarterfinals, all at the Australian Open except one quarterfinal-equivalent run in the Amateur Era. He also reached the Australian Open round of 32 or better in multiple other years, including 1977, 1975, 1971, and 1970.

His best stretch came in the early 1970s and mid-1970s

From 1970 through 1972, he posted consecutive Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open results that included a quarterfinal at the 1970 Australian Open and a round of 32 at the 1972 US Open. He then returned to a higher peak in 1976 with a semifinal at the Australian Open.

He was most productive in his mid-20s to early 30s

Ruffels’ deepest runs cluster between ages 21 and 30, with semifinal results at 21, 22, and 29, plus quarterfinals at 21 and 23. After age 30, his results were mostly early-round exits, including four straight Grand Slam appearances in 1978-1979 that ended in R64 or R128.

His Grand Slam record is solid but top-heavy

He played 86 matches and won 56, a 65% win rate. That total is driven by a relatively small number of deep runs: three semifinals, three quarterfinal-or-better finishes, and several round-of-64 or round-of-128 exits across 30 tournaments.
