Two French Open titles, both in the Amateur Era

Pietrangeli’s strongest Slam was clearly the French Open: he won it in 1959 and 1960, and both titles came before the Open Era. Across his 21 Slam tournaments, those were his only championships.

He reached the French Open final four straight years

The data shows a remarkable clay-court run from 1959 through 1964: champion in 1959 and 1960, finalist in 1961 and 1964, and quarterfinalist in 1962 and 1963. That is six consecutive French Open appearances with no result worse than quarterfinal.

His Open Era results dropped sharply from his Amateur peak

In the Open Era, his best result was only the round of 16, achieved once in 1972. The rest of his Open Era Slam results were three round-of-32 finishes and seven round-of-128 exits, a clear contrast with his Amateur Era finals and titles.

He stayed competitive deep into his late 30s

Pietrangeli was still reaching Slam main draws at ages 34 to 39, with his final recorded appearances in 1973 at age 39. His last notable run was the 1972 French Open round of 16 at age 38.

His best Wimbledon result was much lower than his French Open peak

Wimbledon never produced a result better than the semifinal, which he reached once in 1960 at age 26. Outside that run, his Wimbledon record in the table is mostly early exits, including round-of-128 finishes in 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1973.
