Peak came at the 1993 US Open semifinal

Volkov’s best Grand Slam result was a semifinal at the 1993 US Open, achieved at age 26. That stands alone in his record, ahead of his only quarterfinal and five round-of-16 finishes.

Wimbledon was his strongest major overall

His deepest runs were concentrated at Wimbledon: one semifinal-equivalent round of 16 in 1987, then round of 16 again in 1990, 1991, and 1994, plus round of 32 in 1992, 1995, and 1996. No other Slam produced as many late-stage results.

Best stretch came in 1990-1994

From 1990 through 1994, he reached at least the round of 64 in every Slam appearance and posted his top results in that span, including the 1993 semifinal and the 1992 quarterfinal. The period also contains his only Australian Open round of 16, in 1994.

Career split cleanly across three national labels

His Grand Slam results are divided across Soviet Union, Unified Team, and Russia. He played as Soviet Union from 1987-1991, Unified Team in 1992, and Russia from 1993-1997, with his semifinal and quarterfinal both coming after the switch to Russia.

Late-career decline was steep after age 28

After reaching round of 32 or better in 1995 and 1996, his final Slam season in 1997 ended with two first-round exits at the US Open and Wimbledon and a round of 64 at Roland Garros. Those were his only results worse than round of 32 in the last three years of the record.
