Two quarterfinal runs define the ceiling

Wimbledon was the most productive major overall

Across her career, Wimbledon produced her deepest run and several other strong results: a quarterfinal in 2004, a round of 16 in 1996 and 2006, and multiple round-of-32 finishes. Her Wimbledon record is notably stronger than her French Open and Australian Open results in the late 2000s.

Her late-career level held up better at the US Open than elsewhere

In 2005-2009, she reached the US Open round of 32 or better four times, including round-of-16 finishes in 2003 and 2004 just before that stretch. Over the same late period, she never advanced beyond the round of 32 at the Australian Open or French Open.

She stayed competitive deep into her thirties

Sugiyama’s final Grand Slam appearances came at ages 33 and 34 in 2009, and she still reached the round of 32 at Wimbledon and the Australian Open that year. Her career spanned 1993-2009, with 63 tournaments and an 84-63 match record.
